How do you treat a flooded basement in an occupied building?
Try and find drain and clear surrounding area of debris and if possible, channel flow towards drain. look near shower/sink for drain if location is unknown. ALSO: REMOVE TOILET BOWL
How do you treat a flooded basement in a vacant building?
1) same as occupied building – 2) break into cast iron waste pipe at most convenient location – 3) remove clean-out plug of waste pipe – 4) open street trap on the sewer side
What direction do you turn the street shut down of a hydrant?
counter clockwise
How many times do you have to turn a street shut off of a hydrant? when will there be a noticeable decrease in water flow?
Noticeable decrease in water in about 12 turns and will turn off at 17 turns
Where is the street shut off for a fire hydrant usually found?
found off center on the street side of the chamber
Is there currently a safe way for FDNY personnel to move energized power lines?
No – not even if it presents a condition imminently dangerous to life
Immediatly upon confirming that live electrical wires are down and are creating a situation that places human life in danger, what should the first arriving unit do?
MUST contact the Fire Department Dispatcher via Department radio indicating that life is in danger and request a battalion chief if not one is assigned
What type of nozzle should be attached to the line at wires down and where should it positioned?
Fog nozzle and positioned at least 25’ away from any downed wire while operating this handline
During a power/substation emergency, can fire department members enter a substation before the arrival of a power company representative?
No, unless human life is in jeapordy
Can you bring metal tools or metal ladders inside the gate of a generating station?
do not under any circumstances
During an overheated ballast emergency, what must be used while taking action such as removing the bulb and cover panel, disconnecting the wires, isolating the black and white wires, and checking for fire in the ceiling?
SCBA MUST be used (the ballasts may leak PCB contaminated oil)
What color is the oiler burner remote control and where is it genearlly located in a private dwelling &OLT/Brownstone/Frame & NLT?
Red, PD – top of interior cellar stairs, OLT/Brownstone/Frame – top of the interior cellar stairs, NLT/Apt house – outside of the oil burner room
If a vehicle is to be towed, use what?
use a chain (cable will store kinetic energy)
How hot can catalytic converters reach?
2000 degrees Farenheit
During an ice rescue and using a portable ladder, what rung do you tie the rope on?
