TB Arson and Emergencies 3 Flashcards
Choose correct for Arson
A. Incendiary fire is designation given to a fire in which IC determined via physical exam that fire was intentionally set by someone
B. Suspicious fire is a designation given by Fire Marshal. After all accidental causes have been eliminated, fire is designated suspicious
C. Trailers are materials used to initiate a fire
D. Plants are material arranged to start and feed the initial fire
D
Incorrect for Flammable Accelerants
A. Charring of flr or low burn marks on wall or under the door or on the lower part of the door
B. Char in broken patterns or “puddle-like” circle burns on the fl
C. Low burning and deep charring
D. Heavy body of fire w/little contents. Accelerants increase damage
E. “V” pattern of burning on a wall
E
Fatal fires and Arson Investigations, relatives, neighbors, spectators, media, and members shall not cross est fire lines unless authorized by
A. Assigned Fire Marshal and or Chief of Ops
B. Assigned Fire Marshal only
C. IC
D. Chief of Ops only
A
Choose correct for collecting flammable liquid
A. Skim surface of water containing flammable liq w/clean, used one gal metal paint can
B. Use Clean glass jar w/loosely fitting lid
C. Place evidence in a new, heavy gauge plastic bag and tie it closed. Then place that bag into another new, heavy gauge plastic bag and tie that bag closed
D. Ask IC if Photo Unit is responding. If IC responds they are, label evidence prior to Photo Units arrival so pictures can accurately portray the evidence
C
Choose correct
A. Small crazing of glass indicates remoteness from point of origin and or a relatively slow heat building up
B. Large crazing means intense and rapid heat build up and will be found closer to the point of origin
C. Checkering of glass (half moon effects) usually result from water being applied to heated glass
D. Checkering of glass indicates the window was broken prior to FFs operating at the fire
C
Incorrect for Arson
A. Heavy smoke stains remote from point of origin usually indicate a slow fire build up
B. Light smoke stains indicate a slow build up of fire, little fire damage and are found far from point of origin
C. At 1400 degrees F, wood structural members may burn approx one inch every 45 minutes
D. Deepest char may be found at the point of origin. However, this is not always necessarily so, since most intense heat and fire may be above the point of origin
E. Smaller blister type charring may indicate longer burning and hot fires
B
Incorrect Arson
A. If after arrival at a commercial fire, Fire Marshal classifies it as being incendiary, police can thereafter maintain security
B. Until Fire Marshal arrives, allow no one, including owner, to enter premise unless authorized by OIC
C. Obtain names and addresses of anyone allowed in, and have accompanied by a FF at all times
D. Signal 10-41 Code 4 should be transmitted by IC for a fire that occurred in a warehouse at 1900 hours after all of the employees had left for the day
D
Incorrect for Wires Down (2)
A. Contact Dispatcher for life in danger and specify location (address, pole number) of downed wires
B. Request forthwith power removal and priority response of utility co
C. Request BC if not already assigned
D. Co Off contacted Utility Co Electrical Ops Center directly by cell phone indicating life in danger and request priority response
E. Check nearby bldgs for heat at fuse box/electrical service entrance box using back of hand. If hot, open house service to shut power
F. Stretch HL w/fog noz keeping at least 25’ away from downed wire while operating HL
D Battalion contacts via Cell phone (NOT Co Off)
E Do not open the house service. Heated wires may generate CO gas in the service box, which can explode when the opening of a breaker creates a spark
Scene of suspicious fire correct
A. Record names and addresses received from occupants and witnesses
B. After occupant stops talking freely, try to get add’l info by asking questions related to fire
C. Put names of and statements received from witnesses on fire report
D. Notify IC a plant was discovered and this fire should be declared incendiary
A
Record info received from witnesses. Don’t interrogate! Let the person talk freely. They will usually talk to FD at scene. Listen to what the occupants are saying about the fire. Get names and addresses, if possible. No one but a trained investigator should attempt to interrogate a witness. Do not put the names or statements of witnesses on the face of fire reports.
Victim found at 10-75 w/body lying prone and entire backside of body is red in color while the front appears white. This indicates
A. Victim was alive at time of fire and suffered CO poisoning
B. Victim was breathing during fire
C. Victim moved after death and placed at fire
D. Victim had an allergic reaction to the fire
C
Lividity usually starts _ after death and is completed _ A. 20-30 minutes; 1-2 hours B. 1-2 hours; 2-3 hours C. 1-2 hours; 3-4 hours D. 2-3 hours; 3-4 hours
C
Fire Victim found in a pugilistic position w/outward skull damage: how many correct (2)
A. Skull damage can normally occur from internal pressure w/appearance that skull exploded outward
B. Victim was probably a victim of crime as indicated by damaged skull
C. Defensive posture does not indicate violence/struggle as this occurs due to contraction of muscles during a fire
D. Victim was probably assaulted prior to the fire as they are in a defensive position
A and C
Correct for continuity of evidence
A. Photo Unit shall be requested to respond to photograph evidence at all fires deemed incendiary
B. Evidence shall be labeled and marked to ID the location found prior to arrival of Photo Unit
C. Evidence can be removed to firehouse, as long as it is stored on desk in company office
D. In order to maintain FD control of a scene, 1 FF w/a Can may be left at the scene
D
Request Photo Unit to respond to take pics of evidence if the marshalls not responding. Label and mark evidence and note where it was found at the fire scene.
Never label, mark, or alter evidence in any way prior to photos.
Deceased fire victim with pink to cherry red color of lips, eyelids, or skin indicates
A. Lividity and death prior to fire
B. 4th degree burns and death prior to fire
C. CO exp and victim was alive at time of fire
D. Severe allergic reaction and victim died during fire
C
Possible arson cases incorrect:
A: Overhauling operations should be terminated immediately when the fire is suspicious.
B: If the officer in charge of a commercial fire establishes that it may be of an incendiary origin, there is likelihood a Fire Marshal will arrive before overhauling is completed.
C: Request the Photo Unit to respond to take pictures of the evidence if a marshal is not responding.
D: If after arrival at a commercial fire, the Fire Marshal classifies it as being incendiary, the police can thereafter maintain security.
A) Overhauling operations should be minimized, if possible, when the fire is suspicious.
