What is the action of INH (Isoniazid)?
Kill actively growing mycobacteria and inhibits growth of dormant bacteria
What do you teach a patient taking INH?
Do not drink alcohol as it can cause liver damage
What is the action of RIF (Rifeampin)?
Kills slower growing organisms
What the teach a patient while taking RIF? 3
-Teach pt bodily fluids will be reddish orange tinted.
-Teach females to use a barrier method when having sex for at least 1 mont after stopped (oral contraception & additional method)
-Avoid drinking alcohol, could cause liver damage
-Report darkening of urine, or jaundice coloring.
-Increased bleeding and bruising
What does unusual bleeding, brushing, darkening or urine, and jaundiced or the eyes and skin indicate?
Liver toxicity or failure
What is the action of PZA (Pyrazinamide)
Kills organisms residing in the acidic environment of macrophages
What do you remind the pt of when taking PZA
-Teach the pt to drink at least 8 ounces of water when taking med
-Wear protective clothing in sunlight (photosensitivity)
-Avoid the use of alcohol
What is the action of EMB (Ethambutol)
Inhibits the bacterial RNA synthesis, suppressing growth
What the remind pt of when taking EMB?
-Avoid alcohol when taking
-Report any vision changes immediately
-Drink at least 8 ounces of water and increase water intake
What is TB?
A highly communicable disease caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis
How is TB transmitted?
Airborne
-Coughing, sneezing, talking
What is the rod shapes bacteria infected with TB?
Bacillus
What happens to lymph nodes with TB?
Infected and enlarged
What is secondary TB?
A deactivation of a previously infection person who is with a weakened immune system
Ex-HIV, Cancer
What is the site of infection at and what is it called with secondary TB?
SIMON’s FOCI and in upper lobes
