Taxonomy and Courtship Flashcards
Who made the hierarchical system?
Carl Linnaeus
How are the organisms placed into taxonomic groups?
Their phylogeny (evolutionary history)
What is the Domain?
The highest taxonomic rank consisting of: bacteria, archaea and eukaryote
What is the Kingdom?
Next from domain, contains 4 eukaryote kingdoms: Animalia,
Plantae, Fungi and Prosticista and another kingdom, the Prokaryota
What is Phylum?
Where all organelles are sorted on their basic body design such as vertebrae or invertebrate
What is Class?
Where organisms are based on general traits such as number of limbs
What is Order?
Further division based on specific info
What is Family?
A group of closely related genera
What is Genus?
Closely related species
What is Species?
The basic unit of classification, all members show little variation, contains only 1 type of organism
Why is binomial naming used?
Using the genus name and species name avoids confusion when naming the species as using a common name can be difficult due to different languages
What is meant by hierarchical classification?
A larger group at the top containing smaller groups with no overlap between them
Define species
A group of similar organisms able to reproduce to give fertile offspring
How does courtship take place?
➣Organisms recognise members of their own species by courtship behaviour: such as a chemicals or a sequence of displays. prevents interbreeding
➣They identify a mate who is capable of breeding
➣They form a pair bond that will lead to successful mating and raising of offspring
➣Ensure mating occurs at max probability of ovulation
