Taxonomy Flashcards
What is taxonomy
The science of classifying and naming organisms based on their shared characteristics
Why do we need taxonomy
It’s a universal classification and naming system, so scientists are naming organisms the same way
What is a taxonomist
A person who studies taxonomy
What are the 8 taxons? What does each taxon tell us
Dont Know Proper Classification Of Freaking Garbage Science
Domain > kingdom > phylum > class > order > family > genus > specie
Same you move down taxons, it becomes more specific. Domain includes organisms from all over, and species only includes that one species
What are the human taxons?
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: mammalia
Order: primates
Family: hominidae
Genus: homo
Specie: homo sapien
Who is Carolus ‘Carl’ Linnaeus
*Referred to as the father of taxonomy
*classified organisms based on their characteristics
* Created the a modern way of naming organisms: Binomial nomenclature (two Latin words, genus and species)
Binomial Nomenclature
A naming system, which links organisms who are closely related
The name is genus first and then specie
How to write the names of a organisms
1) first name is the genus, second is the specie
2) genus is written capitalized, and specie is lowercased
3) make sure to underline or italicize the entirety
