Taxonomy Flashcards
What domains do prokaryotic cells belong to?
Bacteria and Archaea
What domain do eukaryotic cells belong in?
domain Eukarya, including plants, animals, fungi, and protists
How do you find out the basis of the 6 kingdom classification system?
The differences in cell type (prokaryotic vs eukaryotic), cellular organization (unicellular vs multicellular), and modes of nutrition (autotrophic vs heterotrophic).
What are the 6 kingdoms in taxonomy?
Archaea, Bacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia
What is the kingdom classification system in order?
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
What are some characteristics of Domain Bacteria?
Only contains one Kingdom, Kingdom Eubacteria.
Can be either autotrophs or heterotrophs.
They are prokaryotes, have cell walls made of peptidoglycan.
Consist of more typical bacteria found in everyday life, some live in extreme environments.
What are some characteristics of Domain Archaea?
Only consists of one Kingdom, Kingdom Archaebacteria.
Archaebacteria are prokaryotes like bacteria, but are more related to Domain Eukarya.
Have unique properties and features that allow them to live in extreme environments.
Can be either autotrophs or heterotrophs.
Have cell wall but lacks pepidoglycam.
What are some characteristics of Domain Eukarya?
Eukaryotes make up most of the world’s visible living things.
Contains four kingdoms, Protista, Fungi, Animalia and Plantae.
What are some characteristics of Kingdom Protista?
Protists are micro-organisms which are neither animals or plants.
Some protists can exhibit properties of both animals and plants (autotroph and heterotrophs).
Some are unicellular and some multicellular.
What are some characteristics of Kingdom Fungi?
Fungi are multicellular organisms.
Obtain food by absorbing materials
into their bodies after externally digesting it (heterotrophs).
What are some characteristics of Kingdom Plantae?
Plants are autotrophic, multicellular eukaryotes.
Cell walls are made of cellulose that support the plant.
Approximately 300,000 species.
What are some characteristics of Kingdom Animalia?
Animals are heterotrophic, multicellular eukaryotes.
Most are motile and reproduce sexually.
800,000 species have been identified.
