They tried to trap Jesus because they were jealous of him, they did not like that he challenged their techniques and interpretations of the law, and he openly critisized them

they hated paying taxes because the romans overcharged him, they were foreign and not their own people, and because they cruel

they felt this way because if he said yes to playing taxes he would lose his popularity among the jews who were against paying taxes and if he said no, he would be in trouble with the romans
