office for national statistics. drug use, alcohol and smoking. in the UK, in 2019, 14.2% of people aged 18 and over smoked cigarettes. got the data from the annual population survey with a sample size of over 320,000 respondents, and the opinions and lifestyle survey with 8,000 respondents.

joseph rowntree foundation. has statistics on poverty rates in the UK. their uk poverty report 2023 found that poverty increases in 2005/6 were the largest in families on universal credit. states where the data is being received from but is not producing the data itself.

the uk national census. sent to households every ten years to receive information on who lives there, their employent, education, religion and health.
academic studies
medical study in 1998 that linked MMR vaccine to autism. resuling in many parents having unvaccinated children. fake academic studies can have negative longterm outcomes.
pressure group
surfers against sewage. set up the safer seas service to provide data on sewage discharges and pollution in 370 locations across the UK. designed to keep people safe, so it is a positive pressure group, but ultimately their data cant be entirely trusted because they have a high degree of bias.
opinion polls
ipsos mori. looks at the favourability of the election of rishi sunak and found that 45% did not want him to be elected, compared to 29% wanting him elected
newspapers
some are quite biased and will partake in sensationalism. they have to abide by the NUJ 12 point code of conduct, but they are allowed to show political bias, especially when they are funded by certain politicians. for example, the sun is conservative supporting. the mirror support labour. this can have an impact on how they present certain stories.

covert observation
2009 sociologist pearson studied the behaviour of blackpool fc supporters, undercover as a law student. he attended 78 matches. he had to commit some offences to blend in with the other supporters. a lot of info was probably forgotten because he couldnt take notes at the actual games
1977 ditton on bakery fiddling, had to keep going to the toilet to takes notes. frequency led to concern and she had to reveal to the concerned coworkers that she was doing research
overt observation
williams 1986 study on the impact of media on anti social behaviour in children. children knew they were being studied. 6-11 year olds were assessed on how aggressive they were after being introduced to television.
non particpant observation
ofsted inspection of lessons in school. there is criteria they look for that they rate from 1-4 and can add notes to make research qualitative as well.
case studies
supporting mental health in schools and colleges. involed 26 case studies, with 15 focused on mental health and 11 on character education. the 15 two day case studies were carried out in different schools and colleges and participants involved senior staff, teachers, counsellors, and wider support staff. focused in 8 different urban regions inengland. found that the schools and colleges believed they had a role and responsibility to support mental health needs of children. only 6% of the insitutions saw lack of priority with their mental health provision.
