source stimulus question Flashcards
what does reliability mean?
this means the research is consistent across time and across different researchers. if the research was done again by a different set of researchers would they get results that concurred? for example a quantitative peice of research could be done at regular intervals over a long period of time
what does validity mean?
this refers to the accuracy of the results - have they been recorded properly? have the questions been asked properly
what does reliability tell you
the extent to which the results can be reporduced when the research is repeated under the same conditions
what does validity tell you
the extent to which results really measure what they are supposed to measure
how is reliability assessed
by checking the consistency of results across time, across different observers and across parts of the rest itself
how is validity assessed
by checking how well the results correspond to established theories and other measures of the same concept
how does reliability relate to validity
a reliable measurement is not always valid; the results might be reproducable but theyre not necessarily correct
how does validity relate to reliability
a valid measurement is generally reliable; if a test produces accurate results, they should be reproducable
what is the layout of an answer to this question to look like
split answer into paras and deal with the following aspects individually:
- where did the info come from, where was it published, who carried out. are they reliable, is the research valid
- how was the research collected, does it have a methodology, was it valid
- when was the source published
- does it refer to other sources or references. this increases validity. has the author included info about themselves. could you find other pieces of their work to validate their claim
- rea charts and graphs closley. are they trying to confuse you. are they labelled correctly, are all aspects clearly identifiable
what else should you include in your answer
your own research or other examples of research you know about
