Taste Flashcards
Which two senses are referred to as gatekeepers and why?
Olfaction and taste, because (1) they identify things that the body needs for survival and therefore should be consumed and (2) detect things that would be bad for the body and that should therefore be rejected
The constant renewal of the olfactory and taste receptors is called?
Neurogenesis
Neurogenesis happens more in the olfactory and taste receptors than the other senses, why?
Because they are less protected and need to regenerate more often.
Sweetness is associated with what? And what kind of response does it trigger?
It is associated with nutritive or caloric value. It trigger an automatic acceptance response and anticipatory metabolic responses.
Bitter taste has what kind of response?
Automatic rejection, this helps organisms to avoid harmful substances.
What are the five basic tastes?
Salty, Sweet, Bitter, Sour, Umami
Sodium Chloride
Salty
Hydrochloric Acid
Sour
Sucrose
Sweet
Quinine
Bitter
Four types of Papillae
Fililform, shaped like cones, all over the tongue Fungiform, shaped like mushrooms, found on the tip and the sides Foliate, a series of folds along the back of the tongue and on the sides Circumvilliate, flat mounds surrounded by a trench at the back of the tongue.
Which papillae does NOT contain taste buds?
Filliform papillae
How many taste buds do you have?
10 ,000
Where does transduction occur on the taste bud?
Each taste bud has 50 to 100 taste cells, which each have a tips that protrude into the taste pore, this is where transduction occurs.
What are the four nerves that carry taste signals to the brain?
Chorda tympani Nerve - from the front and the sides on the tongue Glossopharynal Nerve - from the back of the tongue Vagus Nerve - the mouth and throat Superficial Petronasal Nerve - from the soft palette (the top of the mouth)
