Olfaction Flashcards
Macrosmatic
Having a keen sense of smell that is important to survival
Microsmatic
Having a less keen sense of smell that is not important to survival
Pheromones
Molecules emitted by members of a species to cause a specific reaction in another member of the same species.
Anosmia
The loss of the ability to smell as a result of damage or an infection.
recognition threshold
Concentration at which quality can be recognised.
Olfactory Mucosa
Dime-sized region located on the rood of the nasal cavity that houses the Olfactory Receptor Neurons (ORNs) and a covered with Olfactory Receptors. Only one type of olfactory receptor per ORN.
Olfactory Receptors
Sensitive to chemical odorants, each one to a specific odorant.

Where does smell go after the olfactory bulb?
Piriform Cortex (primary olfaction area) and then to the Orbitofrontal cortex (secondary olfaction area) both of these areas and the bulb send information to the amygdala at the same time.
Flavour is a combination of what?
nasal and oral stimulation
Bimodal Neurons
Neurons that respond to more than one sense.
Proust Effect
How taste and smell unlock memories you didn’t know you had.
