Taste Flashcards
A muscular organ in the mouth of most vertebrate that manipulates food for mastication and is used in the act of swallowing.
Tongue
The primary organ of taste in the gustatory system.
Tongue
An oval body consisting of three kinds of epithelial cells.
Taste buds
What are the three kinds of epithelial cells in the taste buds?
Supporting cells
Gustatory receptor cells
Basal cells
This where receptors for sensation of taste are located.
Taste buds
Contain microvilli and surround about 50 gustatory receptor cells in each taste bud.
Supporting cells
Project from each gustatory receptor cell to the external surface through the taste pore.
Gustatory cells (gustatory hairs)
An opening in the taste bud
taste pore
Stem cells found at the periphery of the taste bud near the connective tissue layer, produce supporting cells, which then develop into gustatory receptor cells.
Basal cells
These are taste buds found in elevations on the tongue which increase the surface area and provide a rough texture to the upper surface of the tongue.
Papillae
Three types of papillae contain taste buds:
Circumvallate/Vallate papillae
Fungiform papillae
Foliate papillae
Forms an inverted V-shaped row at the back of the tongue.
Circumvallate/vallate papillae
How much taste buds are housed in each vallate papillae?
100-300
Mushroom-shaped elevations scattered over the entire surface of the tongue that contain about 5 taste buds each.
Fungiform papillae
Located in small trenches on the lateral margins of the tongue, but most of their taste buds degenerate in early childhood.
Foliate papillae
