Tarsal Coalitions Flashcards
What are the 3 types of tarsal coalitions?
fibrous- syndesmosis
cartilaginous- synchondrosis
osseous- synostosis
When do tarsal coalitions usually present and why?
Tarsal coalitions are commonly seen in adolescence because that’s when the bones start to ossify.
When do CN bars present vs TC bars?
CN bars present at 8-12 years.
TC bars present at 12-16 years.
Are tarsal coalitions bilateral?
Only 25-50%
What are conservative treatments for tarsal coalitions?
- arch support
- decrease activity
- immobilization in short leg cast in neutral or varus position
- NSAIDS
tarsal coalitions surgical options
resection or arthrodesis
Common clinical presentation of tarsal coalition
tarsal/hindfoot stiffness/pain
ankle sprains
valgus/flatfoot
peroneal spasm
The ___ is between the middle and posterior facet
sustentaculum tali
bifurcate ligament
from calcaneus to navicular and cuboid
chopart joint
articulation between hindfoot and midfoot
(talus-navicular / calcaneus-cuboid)
talocalcaneal joint aka subtalar joint has how many facets and joint capsules?
3 facets, 2 joint capsules
MRI findings of osseous vs cartilaginous vs fibrous
osseous: hyper in T1, hypo T2
cartilaginous: intermediate, intermediate
fibrous: hypo, hypo
While osseous has continuous cortical margins, cartilaginous and fibrous will have abnormal joint space, possible surrounding bone edema, and other similar arthritic findings surrounding.
Joint between the talus and calcaneus that’s posterior to the sinus tarsi
posterior talocalcaneal joint
