targeted hormone therapies Flashcards
describe the Mech of action of Prednisone
- Synthetic glucocorticoid that decreases lymphocyte proliferation
–> used to
describe Dexamethasone
- Synthetic glucocorticoid that decreases lymphocyte proliferation
–> used to reduce intracranial pressure associated with brain tumors
–> helps reduce adverse effects of nausea and vomiting.
Describe tamoxifen
- Selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM)
–> competitive inhibitor targeting ONLY tumors that express the estrogen receptor
–> reduces the growth of estrogen dependent breast cancers
- ADVERSE: increases change of endometrial cancer
- TX of breast cancer
Anastrozole
- Aromatase inhibitor
- post-menopausal women synthesize estrogen from peripheral tissue where aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen
–> anastrozole inhibits aromatase activity which can lower estrogen levels
Used to TX estrogen-sensitive breast tumors in post-menopausal women
Flutamide
- competivitevly inhibit testosterone from binding to androgen receptors
–> used to tx prostate cancer
Bicalutamide
- competitively inhibit testosterone from binding to the androgen receptor
–> both are used to treat prostate cancer
Leuprolide
- potent gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist used in the TX of prostate cancer
–> cause desensitization of the GnRH receptors, which reduces the secretion of both LH and FSH from the anterior pituitary
–> leads to signifcant drop in testosterone synthesis
Degarelix
- GnRH antagonist
–> degarelic inhibits GnRH from activating LH and FSH receptors on anterior pituitary
–> causes reduction in testosterone production
- TX of Prostate cancer
Goserelin
- Mech of action:
–> potent gonadotrophin releasing hormone agonist
–> cause desensitization of the GnRH receptors, which redcuse the secretion of both LH and FSH from anterior pitutitary
- TX of Prostate cancer
