In order to bring about change what must a pressure group first decide to do?
Who or what it wishes to influence.
What does it need to think about?
The people or the organisation that has to make or change a decision to bring about what is wanted.
Examiner tip
When revising it is important to think of two different target groups: those that can bring about the change themselves and those that can influence others who can make the change.
You wish to change the school uniform policy at school. What would be good to do first?
Get the school council on your side to prove that you have the support of the other students.
Who are important targets for changing the school uniform policy?
Head teacher, the school council and definitely the governors.
Who makes the final decision for changing school uniform?
The governors.
You wish to keep open a local youth centre threatened with closure. Who is the target group?
The local council that made the initial decision to close it.
What are the other target groups for the closure of the youth centre?
Local councillors, fellow young people, adults and the local media can all assist you in applying pressure on the local council.
You disagree with animal testing for beauty products and the use of fur in clothing who are your target groups?
Local shops, national retail chains, the product manufacturers and the media.
The target group relates to the change you wish to bring about. You also need to think about what?
The nature of the change.
Remember these three questions:
What is the name of the pressure group?
What are they trying to achieve?
Who do they need to influence (target groups)?
