What is being an active citizen?
Having the knowledge, skills and understanding to participate in society.
What is campaigning?
An organised series of events that aim to influence the views of others.
What is community action?
Citizens within a local community coming together because of an issue to bring about change.
What is democracy?
A society where citizens, through an open and fair electoral system, are able to vote in regular elections.
What is direct action?
Campaigning that can include non-violent or violent activities, which target something (a person, group or property) deemed offensive to the protester.
What is indirect action?
Campaigning that can include support for a group, signing petitions or lobbying on behalf of a pressure group.
What is freedom of association, of speech and of the vote?
The ability of being able to act in a certain way without interference - to be able to meet freely with others without fear of prosecution.
What is participation?
Taking part in society such as voting/standing for election or informal action such as volunteering/joining community groups.
What are pressure groups?
Groups of citizens who share the same view for bringing about change.
