taphonomy Flashcards
what is taphonomy
the use of bioenvironmental frame work to try and interpret decomposition
what is algor mortis?
body cooling
what is rigor mortis?
body stiffening
what is livor mortis?
hypostasis
intrinsic factors affecting decomposition
size, weight, fat content of body
Extrinsic factors affecting decomposition
cultural –> prep of body
environmental –> biotic and abiotic
5.5-8.5 pH optimum for bone preservation
the extents of preservation
minimum = soil silhouettes - bone gone just soil stain
maximum = fossilisation - bone replaced by mineral
what is the synchronic context
the changes observed and measured in the local system
what is the dichronic context
how the item of interest changes over time (aka the cadaver)
what are liable joints
joints held together by soft tissues –> areas with mobility
