Tapers Flashcards
Week 7
What is a machine shop example of a slow taper?
-Morse Taper (think lathe tailstocks)
-Taper Pin (self holding taper)
Morse Taper ratio: 5/8” per foot
Taper Pin ratio: 1/4” per foot
A slow taper is __ degrees or less.
A slow taper is 3 degrees or less.
What is a machine shop example of a Fast Taper?
Milling machine spindle. (Driven by dogs, not taper)
What is a Taper Pin?
One of the slow tapers or “self-holding” tapers used in machine assembly.
Taper Pin ratio: 1/4” per foot
Review TPF calculations
(James to provide formulas - not on trig (soh cah toa))
TPF = ((D-d) / length of taper) x 12
How do you know if you have a fast taper?
Taper angle measures 3* or greater
Review tailstock offset calculations
(James to provide formulas - not on trig (soh cah toa))
Tailstock offset = (TPF x length of work) / 24
(reminder: length of work is entire piece, not just length of taper)
What are some methods for turning a taper? (5)
(sorry prescriptive copy-paste)
1) Grinding and setting a tool bit (for short bevels & chamfers)
2) Setting the lathe compound slide (for short or steep tapers)
3) Tailstock set-over or offset (for long tapers on short stock)
4) Taper attachment on lathe (for long tapers on long stock)
5) Tapered reamers (for finished internal tapers)
