Grinding Flashcards
Week 5
True or false: Thermite is composed of powdered aluminum and iron oxide.
True
What is the danger of using a belt sander to grind away rust after it has been used to grind aluminum?
It creates thermite. The rusty steel (iron oxide) can generate heat and sparks which ignites the thermite and can create explosive reactions.
What is the primary function of grinding?
To smooth and finish a product (often to specific size)
What are the two major types of grinding?
(1) Offhand Grinding (grinder or workpiece held by hand)
(2) Precision Grinding (variety of operations done to machine work to extremely close tolerances)
What are some of the basic grinding operations? (6)
(1) Cylindrical Grinding
(2) Plunge-cut Grinding
(3) Form Grinding
(4) Internal Grinding
(5) Surface Grinding
(6) Centerless Grinding
What is the difference between external and internal grinding?
External grinding occurs on the outside of the work surface while internal grinding is usually performed to shape a cylindrical hole
How can you grind on a lathe?
Mounting a tool post grinder. This can be used for both internal and external grinding operations.
What test should you always perform before mounting a grinding wheel?
A “ring” test
What should you never do when installing a grinding wheel? (3)
(1) Never exceed speed recommendations
(2) Never force a wheel onto an arbor
(3) Do not over tighten
What should you always ensure when installing a grinding wheel?
(1) Flanges are recessed
(2) Flange diameter should be at least 1/3 wheel dia.
(3) Soft blotter must be between flange and wheel
