Philosophical–nontheistic, passive (yin)
Religious–polytheistic, agressive (yang)
The Tao
the influence, power, way of the universe (instead of supreme god); mysterious
Filial piety
respect/revere ancestors/older generations
even more than spirits or gods
wisdom, gave you life
proper burial, maintain grave, honor w/ sacrifices
Yin and Yang
Yin: feminine, negative, maternal, intuition, dark, earth, death
Yang: masculine, positive, paternal, intellect, light, heaven, life
complementary; all people/things have aspects of both
Wu-wei
inaction–don’t resist, confront, defy natrual order of universe; don’t try to change others (just yourself), no selfish grasping
few laws by govt
Elixir of Immortality
religious Taoists tried to create with herbs; exercise, etc (not in line with wu wei)
Scripture
one of largest canons in world: spirit writers/ mediums inspired with scripture
Tao Te Ching
Chuang Tzu: moral guidelines; knowledge can be deceptive
I Ching: book of changes (hexagrams–divination)
water as symbol
doesn’t resist, conforms to universe
Hygiene school
3600 gods in body: no meat/wine; worms for death/old age/sickness; no gain or solids
Wu-hsing
Five elements (basic to Chinese culture): fire, earth, metal, water, wood
kuei and shen
Kuei: bad spirits, shen: good; everywhere, try to invite good (food) and scare off bad (fireworks)
