What is the Tannenbaum + Schmidt continuum?
Scale to define how autocratic managers are
What is Theory X on the scale?
Where managers give no freedom to subordinates in decision making
What is Theory Y on the scale?
Where managers give lots of freedom to subordinates in decision making
What is 1 (Tells)?
Authoritarian management style: team has no input in decision making
Useful if: -team is unskilled/untrustworthy/or small
Un useful if: team is experienced/skilled and committed
What is 2 (Sells)?
(Still) Authoritarian and Team (still) has no input in decision making. However managers will ‘sell’ the decision
(May make employees feel more appreciated than ‘tells’

Mangers make ‘tentative’ decisions:
Subordinates -> discuss/debate
What is 5 (jans)?
Manger explains issue: all attempt to find a solution but the manger will have the final say.
What is 6 (delegates)?
Manger explains problem + makes resources available clear
(Subordinates make decision but management is responsible)
What is 7 (abdicates)?
Subordinates recognise problem and then solve it. (Full freedom to subordinates)
