Q

What does your findings suggest?

A

The findings then suggest that to increase health-seeking behaviors of the older adult, the aforementioned significant factors should be
considered. These factors must be instilled in various health programs for the older adults that seek to promote health and prevent diseases.

Q

The older adult population, defined as those aged 60 years and older, is recognized to be a vulnerable population that are more likely to develop physical comorbidities compared to other age groups. The older adults are said to have a higher prevalence of health problems but may have issues in seeking healthcare services or personally addressing health needs.

16
Q

how many concepts comprises in the health belief model?

A

It comprises six (6) concepts which include
perceived susceptibility,
perceived severity,
perceived benefits,
perceived barriers,
cues to action, and
self-efficacy (Boskey, 2022)

17
Q

what are the meaning of its concepts

A

An individual’s behavior towards health is influenced by
their perception of the probability of getting the disease
(perceived susceptibility). Additionally, people are
reluctant to give up something they like if they do not gain
anything in exchange (perceived benefit). Individuals are
more likely to alter their health-related habits in response
to the perceived severity of adverse impacts (perceived
severity). Furthermore, most people don’t make positive
changes to their health practices because they anticipate
challenges, may it be in finances, efforts, dangers, etc.
(perceived barrier). Posters, media, and pamphlets are all
examples of cues to action that may motivate people to improve their health. Lastly, the concept of self-efficacy examines the confidence in their capacity to bring about positive change in their health (Boskey, 2022).

18
Q

what are the independent variables in the study?

A

contributing factors,
health perception,
pre-existing comorbidities

19
Q

what are the dependent variables in the study?

A

Health-seeking behaviors (categorized into behavioral characteristics and health service utilization)

and what an older adult does in response to a stimulus

20
Q

what is behavioral characteristics and healthcare utilization

A

Behavioral characteristics are tobacco smoking, alcohol
use, physical activity, and diet intake. Health services
utilization includes difficulty seeking health services,
visits to the health facility in the last 6 months, and the
purchase of medications.

21
Q

What is your intervening variable

A

Demographic data

is the intervening variable that assist the researchers to understand the outcomes of all aspects of the health-seeking behavior of the respondents by
differentiating other indicators by demographic
characteristics. Individuals’ level of health safety
awareness is strongly related to socio-demographic
characteristics, particularly educational achievement, age,
sex, and income (Jabar, 2019; Mou, 2022). These variables,
although do not directly affect health-seeking behaviors of
older adults, play a role in behavioral change.

22
Q

what is the statement of the problem

A

This study will determine the health-seeking behaviors
among older adults with comorbidities in selected Barangays
in Butuan City. Specifically, it will seek to answer the
following questions:
1. What is the profile of the older adults in terms of:
1.1 Age;
1.2 Sex;
1.3 Civil status;
1.4 Household census;
1.5 Monthly income; and,
1.6 Educational attainment.
2. What are the pre-existing comorbidities of the
respondents?
3. What are the factors that contributes to health
service utilization in terms of:
3.1 Accessibility to health facilities;
3.2 Affordability of medical care cost;
3.3 Availability of drugs; and,
3.4 Quality of medical care.
4. What is the extent of health perceptions in terms of:
4.1 Perceived susceptibility;
4.2 Perceived severity;
4.3 Perceived barriers;
4.4 Perceived self-efficacy;
4.5 Perceived benefits; and,
4.6 Cues to action.
5. What are the health-seeking behaviors of older adults
in terms of:
5.1 Behavioral characteristics; and,
5.2 Health service utilization.
6. Is there a significant relationship between healthseeking behaviors of older adults when grouped according
to the profile of the respondents?
7. Is there a significant relationship between the preexisting comorbidities and the health-seeking behaviors
of older adults?
8. Is there a significant relationship between the
contributing factors and the health-seeking behaviors of
older adults in terms of health service utilization?
9. Is there a significant relationship between the health
perceptions and the health-seeking behaviors of older
adults in terms of behavioral characteristics?
10. Based on the findings, what intervention plan may
be proposed in promoting health-seeking behavior?

23
Q

Hypothesis

A

Ho1: There is no significant relationship between the
demographic factors and the health seeking behaviors of older
adults with comorbidities in terms of behavioral
characteristics.
Ho2: There is no significant relationship between the preexisting comorbidities and the health seeking behaviors of
older adults with comorbidities.
Ho3: There is no significant relationship between the
contributing factors and the health seeking behaviors of
older adults with comorbidities in terms of health service
utilization.
Ho4: There is no significant relationship between the health
perceptions and the health seeking behaviors of older adults
with comorbidities in terms of behavioral characteristics.

24
Q

Significance of the Study

A

Older adult. The study will pave the way for determining
the health seeking behavior and caring for the needs and concerns of people aged 60 and up and help identify the
determinants and develop appropriate healthcare policies.

City Health Office. The study is accountable for ensuring that health services are offered to all of its citizens and are acceptable and affordable and guarantee that every older adult will obtain high-quality medical care; as well as oversee the implementation of various health programs. This study will provide them with relevant information regarding the healthcare needs of the population, allowing them to identify the determinants of health-seeking behavior among older adults.

Office for the Senior Citizens’ Affairs. The study aims to encourage and give a maximum support for the older adult with comorbidities and inform them about their perceptions with regards in health promotion and disease prevention practices. And also their hindrances in seeking healthcare services to give them an optimum intervention they need.

Department of Health. The study will provide valuable
insights to the Department of Health by evaluating the
utilization of health services in the community. Factors such
as cost, travel time, cultural norms, educational attainment,
and inadequacies in medical facilities will enable them to
gain a deeper understanding of the specific challenges faced
by the selected Barangays in Butuan City. This information will serve as a crucial resource for them to modify and
develop plans and policies, particularly in the context of
older adult care, ensuring targeted and effective
interventions to address the unique healthcare needs of the
population.

Family. The study will contribute to the family to support one another through difficult times and to help their family members who are unable to take care for themselves. The study will contribute to families by providing insights into the needs of older adults with comorbidities. This knowledge will enable families to support and assist their older family members more efficiently within their household, ensuring their well-being and quality of life.

Future Researchers. The study will serve as their
reference and can give them new ideas if they plan to conduct a similar study with the researchers’ study in the future. The study’s findings can inspire and guide future studies in understanding health-seeking behaviors among older adults, ultimately contributing to the advancement of knowledge and the development of effective strategies to address their healthcare needs.

25
Q

Scope and Limitation

A

The general intent of this study is to determine the health seeking behaviors among older adults with comorbidities in selected barangay in Butuan City. The primary subjects of this research study will consist of older adults with comorbidities, both male and female, with the age range of 60 years old and above. Moreover, only those who are clinically diagnosed and assessed to have the comorbidity
will take part of the survey. The data collection from respondents will be within the top three selected barangays in Butuan City namely, Barangay Libertad, Barangay Doongan, and Barangay San Vicente. Furthermore, this study will not cover other behaviors which do not fall as part of the health seeking behaviors of older adults with comorbidities and individuals whose age is below 65 years old.
