Where should I look?
Maintain eye contact with the listener. If they will not meet your eyes, find a third-party to look at together.
How should I speak?
Speak the language of your listener - avoid jargon and use their phrases.
Vary your voice, it’s tone etc.
What should my attitude be?
Calm and collected. Never become angry or sarcastic towards your listener(s).
How can I build connection?
Call the listener by name
Offer encouragement and praise
Use humour
Ask for their feedback on things
What sorts of questions should I ask?
Open-ended questions, to provide them the chance open up and talk.
What if they’re not responsive?
Paraphrase what they say back, to show you listen and encourage them to embellish further.
