Phatic
‘Small talk’, common in British culture. Empty words, doesn’t mean much.
Transactional
Used in order to gain something e.g. ‘What time is it?/’Five o clock’.
Evaluative
Making a judgment on something, revising it. E.g. A film,food, people.
Expository
Trying to explain something e.g. An idea, concept. Could be in a classroom.
Instructive
Giving instructions, often clear by the use of imperative verbs. Linked to face needs.
Persuasive
Encouraging someone to do what you want them to do.
Collaborative
Language that shows agreement, co-operation, inclusive pronouns e.g. ‘We’
Performative
Performing an action through utterances e.g. An apology. The state of being has changed.
Expressive
Revealing feelings, emotions and identifying and expressing them.
