Tajfel Social Identity Theory Flashcards
Aim
To identify how minimal conditions bring about discrimination
Social identification procedure
They were randomly allocated into groups after being shown artists paintings and asked if they liked them
Social categorisation procedure
They thought they were allocated groups dependent on whether they liked the artists, and felt a connection
Social comparison procedure
They compared the number of points their group and the other group would be given dependent on options, and maximised how many points their group would get or how many points the other team wouldn’t get
Positive distinction procedure
They felt better when they felt their group was superior, and this is what causes discrimination
Findings
The 48 15-16 year old boys would maximise the profit ratio to their own group at the expense of actual profit
Conclusion
Randomly categorising people into groups is all that’s required to cause discrimination
