Taenia Flashcards
what are the 4 taenia species
t. saginata
t. solium
t. asiatica
t. militceps
what are the hosts for the 4 taenia species
t. saginata = cow
t. solium = pig
t. asiatica - pigs/cattle
t. militcepts = dogs wild canids (larval stage sheep)
what diseases do taenia cause
saginata = beef tapeworm solium = pork tapeworm (cyticercosis) asiatica = asian tapeworm
where is t. saginata found
africa
eastern europe
SEA
c+S america
where is t. solium found
world wide - in places close to pork which could be undercookeld
what are the symtoms of beef tapeworm
often asymptomatic
heavy = weight loss, abdom pain, diarrhoae, constipation
serious: intestinal blockage
and vitamin deficieny due to absorption by parasites
what are the symptoms of pork tapeworm
adult worm similar to t. saginita.
eggs however are also infective and cause cysticercosis (very damaging), larvae develop in CNS and ocular tissue - paralysis, retinal damage, epilepsy.
subcutaneous cysts
what are the symptoms of t. asiactica
same as t. saginata
what are the symptoms of t. miliceps
cystercosis usually in brain in temperate regions and eyes or subcutaneous tissue in tropics
how many cases of beef and pork tapeworm are there
beef = 60 mil /a pork = 4 mil/a
how is tapeworm diagnosed
stool for eggs - eggs same for all taenia, diff to differentiate
detected 2-3 months after infection
what is the treatment for beef tapeworm
praziquantel
niclosamide
intestinal blockage may require surgery
what is the treatment for pork tapeworm
cystcercosis treatment - cysts/skeletal muscle = surgery
extraocular muscle = praziquantral, albendazole + steroids
neurocysticercosis = high doses albendazole and steroids
what is treatment for asian tapeworm
praziquantel and albendazole
what is treament for t. multiceps
usually involved surgery albendazole = effective
