echinocccus Flashcards
what are the four species of echinococcus
e. granulosus
e. multiocularis
e. vogeli
e. oligathrus
what are the hosts of e. granulosus
larval cyst
= sheep, goats, swine cattle, horse, camel and humans
what are the hosts of multiocularis
rare in humans
foxes
lesser extent cats and dogs, coyotes wolves.
larval cyst = rodents
what are the hosts of e. vogeli
adult = bush dog
rodents int host.
what are the hosts of e. oligathrus
adult wild cats - rodents int. host
what do ecchinococcus cause
hydatid cysts
what do each echinoccocus cause
E. granulosus = cystic echinococcosis
E. multiocular = alveolar echinococcosis
E. vogeli = polycutic echinococcosis
where in cystic echinococcus found
wide dist - meditarianian, middle east, americas, iceland, australia europe
where is alveolar echinoccous found
northern hemisphere
where is polycistic echinoccocus found
south america
what are the symptoms of cystic echinococcus
bilary obstruction - liver cirrohisis bronchial obstruction renal outflow obstruction increase intracranial pressure hydrocephalus due to cerebrospinal fluid outflow obstruction cyst rupture - anaphylaxssi
what are the symptoms of alveolar echinoccocus
infection behaves like slow growing malignant tumour
how is cystic echinococcus diagnosed
imaging of hydatid cyst is main method ELISA indirect haemaglutination CT scan ultrasound radiograph
how is alveolar echinococcus diagnosed
difficult due to discrete cysts protoscolices
ultrasound preffered, ct scans
confirm via elisa
biopsy
what is the treatment for cystic echinococcus
surgery 90% effective can be risky dependent on location and age of cyst - may need chemo - albendazole preffered
