Origins of Martial Arts in Korea

Training
Grew as warrior corps were organized to deal with the threat of foreign invaders. Adopted as an import subject of learning.
Best known
Most well known was the warrior corps from Silla. The Hwarangdo warriors are credited as being an influentical part in Silla conquering the other provinces and unifying Korea under one rule.
1909
Invaded by Japan. Japanese colonial government prohibited the practice of martial arts.
Masters were killed, trained in secret or fled the country.
1945
The end of world war 2 and the occupation of colonial rule under Japan. Martial arts resurfaced and flourished.
1953
After the end of the Korean war, martial arts continued to grow in popularity. 2000 martial art masters traveled to over a 100 countries to spread Korean martial arts.
1955
Five main Kwans emerged to organize martial arts in Korea.

- Moo Duk Kwan
- Song Moo Kwan
- Chang Moo Kwan
- Yun Moo Kwan
1971
The Kwans selected the name Taekwondo to become the national martial arts in korea.
1972
The Kukkiwon was founded as the central gymnasium and the headquarters for Taekwondo worldwide. It is the center for all Kukkiwon black belt certification
1973
The world Taekwondo Federation (WTF) was formed by the Kukkiwon with 108 countries as members.
Dr Un Yong Kim - 1st President
WTF is the international authority for Taekwondo competition.
- Kukkiwon name formalized
- Taekwondo manual published by Kukkiwon
- 1st high grade Dan promotion conducted at Kukkiwon
- 1st world championship was organized and held at Kukkiwon.
1974
Kukkiwon register with South Korean government for founding, elects Dr Un Yong Kim as 1st President
1980
Implementation of Taekwondo Instructors Train Education
International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognises World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)
1982
Taekwondo was selected as an exhibition event at the 1988 olympics
1988
Taekwondo premiered as an exhibition sport in the Olympics games in Seoul, South Korea
1992
Taekwondo returns as an exhibition sport in the Olympic game in Barcelona Spain
Also the first Hanmadang internation Taekwondo competition
