Taboo List Weakness Flashcards
What is a weakness of a Lab Experiment?
It could effect the validity of an experiment of a studys results as participants are aware they are being monitored
What is a weakness of a field experiment?
Validity is still questioned as variables are still manipulated
What is a weakness of a quasi experiment?
Ethical issues such as gaining valid and informed consent arise
What is a weakness of an observation?
Ethical concerns such as gaining valid consent arise
What is a weakness of participant observations?
May be biased as the participant is also taking part , therfore it may be less effective than other forms of observation
What is a weakness of non participant observation?
Irrelevant data may be recorded as observer is distant from experiment
What is a weakness of content analysis?
Researchers may struggle to find relevant content for their study
What is a weakness of questionnaires?
They have a low chance of gathering valid answers
What are two weakness of using interviews?
Ppts may give exaggerated or unrealistic answers due to knowing the data is recorded (social desriability bias)
Very time and resource-consuming
What are 2 weaknesses of a correlational study?
Researchers cant predict the causation
Prone to confounding variables
What are two weaknesses of case studies?
Researcher cant generalise their findings
Researchers have the possibility to gather uneccesary or unrealistic information due to how in-depth case studies can be
What are two weaknesses of pilot studies?
It increases money used by researchers doing a study due to them having to run a study before the main one
Time-consuming
What are two weaknesses of brain scans?
They are expensive
They arent appropiate for all paitents (for example, patients with anxiety)
What are three weaknesses of P.E.T Scans?
They use ionizing radiation
The machines are expensive and uncommon
They are less precise than MRI’s
What are two weaknesses of C.A.T Scans?
Ppts are subjected to radiation
The injection required for the C.A.T Scan may cause some ppts issues
What are two weaknesses of M.R.I’s?
They are very expensive
Long scan time could cause Ppts major discomfort
What are three weaknesses of Longitudinal?
Ppts may atrophy
Costly as its over a long period of time
Very time consuming
What are two weaknesses of cross-sectional studies?
You cant measure change in behaviour
Lots of extraneous variables may occur due to wide sample
What are two weaknesses of self-report techniques?
Results may suffer from social desirability bias as they want to please the researcher
Inter-rater reliability may be low as all participants may record data differently
What are two weaknessess of online research?
Very hard to properly debrief ppts who partake in anything such as questionnaires online
Issues with terms and conditions may lead to complicated issues with gathering data for study
What are two weaknesses of random sampling?
very time consuming as you need to contact people from a potentially long list
it cant be done with access to the sample frame
What are two weaknesses of systematic sampling?
it is time consuming
it is not truly unbiased unless we select the Nth number with a random technique
What are two weaknesses of opportunity sampling?
normally leads to an unrepresentative sample
could lead to sample displaying specific participant variables (e.g. volunteer bias)
What are two weaknesses of Stratified sampling?
it is very time consuming
it is potentially impossible due to cases of rare characteristics
What are three weaknesses of Quota sampling?
it is very time consuming
it is potentially impossible in some cases (e.g. hard to access people)
it is bias due to ppts being selected by researcher
What are two weaknesses of self-selected sampling?
volunteer bias may be shown in the sample
ppts may display unhelpful ppts variables such as demand characteristics due to the volunteer nature of the sampling method
What are two weaknesses of Snowball sampling?
The sample may be unrepresentative of society on the whole
Data can’t be generalised due to niche groups
What are two weaknesses of Independent groups?
It requires double the sample size due to ppts taking part in separate conditions
you can’t account for ppt variables
What are two weaknesses of Repeated measures?
Order effects may occur
Participants have a greater likelihood to alter their behaviour due to guessing the aim of a study
What are two weaknesses of Matched pairs?
it is time consuming and potentially expensive to match ppts on key variables
it may be impossible in cases of uncommon characteristics
What are two weaknesses of a bar chart?
They require extra explanation
It doesn’t show interdependency or causation of data
What are two weaknesses of Pie charts?
They can easily become complex
They dont reveal key assumptions or causes of the data
What are two weaknesses of line graphs?
They easily become messy + complicated
Limited to numerical data only
What are two weaknesses of scatter graphs?
they can be hard to read
they only allow two variables to be analysed
What are two weaknesses of a histogram?
you cant use it to compare sets of data
the use of intervals prevents the calculation of an exact measure
What are two weaknesses of a Mean?
they are effected by outliers
you cannot use the mean for nominal data
What are two weaknesses of a median?
you cant calculate the median for nominal data
doesn’t take into account all values in the data
What are two weaknesses of a mode?
not always helpful for a study
it ignores all other parts of the data
What are two weaknesses of Standard deviation?
it can be influenced by outliers
can be incredibly complex to calculate
What are two weaknesses of the range?
It is heavily influenced by the presence of outliers
it ignores all other data in the set bar two values
