Google BigQuery, and soon Redshift, can live connect to the data so there is no need to worry about updating extracts. Google Analytics and Salesforce.com are extract only due to API constraints, but nonetheless Tableau Online can update extracts on a scheduled-basis directly from GA and SFDC (pull).

How does Tableau Online connect to and update data that is within a firewall?

Since Tableau Online runs in the cloud, it does not have access to the data sources that reside within your corporate network. In order to access this data, you will need to ‘push’ this data to Tableau Online manually or automatically on a given schedule using tools on your desktop (command line or Tableau Desktop).

As a best practice, we recommend publishing the data source separately from the workbook in order to simplify data updates and ensure consistency across workbooks.

Tableau does not have access to your data, even when it is stored in Tableau Online.

Tableau does have access to and may monitor metrics that have to do with system utilization, account status, and performance.
