T4 Flashcards
What are the properties of group 2 elements?
white compounds
high density
high bp and mp
Are group 2 oxidising or reducing agents?
reducing agents
When G2 metals react with oxygen, what is formed?
white ionic solids
G2 metals + water =
hydroxides + hydrogen
G2 oxides with water
form metal hydroxides
alkaline because they release OH ions
Why does thermal stability of carbonates/nitrates in goup 2 increase down the group ?
- G2 has a large charge
- larger radius
- so lower charge density
- hence the weaker the polarising power
- attracts the bodning electrons in the negative ion less strongly.
- will distort the lecton cloud less
- makes it hardre to break apart and decompose.
How to test for thermal stability of nitrates?
- test how long an amount of brown gas to be produced
- need to do it in a fume cupboard.
Uses of Mg
milk of mg is used to neturalise excess acids
colours of halgens?
Fl- yellow gas
Cl- green gas
Br- brown gas
I- grey solid
What is the trend in reactivity down G7?
decreases
Colours of halogens in water and in organic solvent?
water:
cl- colourless
Br- yellow/orange
I- brown
Organic solvent
cl- colourless
Br- orange/red
I- purple
Which halogen is the strongest reducing agent and the strongest oxidising agent?
Strongest:
reducing agent - iodine
oxidising agent - chlorine
