T2 Flashcards
What are the main properties of ionic compounds?
- hard
- brittle
- conduct electricity but only when dissolved
- Hight b.p and mp
What is a covalent bond?
electrostatic attraction between between two nuclei and the shared pair of electrons between them.
What is a dative covalent bond?
When the pair of electrons forming a covalent bond are donated by one atom only.
4 bond pairs 0 lone
tetrahedral 109.5
3 bonds 1 lone
trigonal pyramidal 107.5
2 bonds 2 lone
Bent 104.5
5 bonds 0 lone
Trigonal bipyramidal
120 and 90
Define electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract the bonding pair of elctrons towards itself.
What is metallic bonding?
the strong eletcrostatic attraction between metal ions and delocalised electrons
What is the stucture and property of diamond?
Each carbon has 4 strong covalent bonds in a very rigid giant covalent structure.
- hard
- does not conduct electricity
Describe the structure of graphite
Each carbon has 3 covalent bonds to create layers of hexagons. Each carbon atoms also has 1 delocalised electron.
