16
Q

What does the shedable EDP do?

A

Allows the power from non essential equipment to be rerouted to the propulsion motor in an emergency.

17
Q

What sources of 450 V supply are there if the motor generators are lost?

A

Converted diesel generator

Emergency generator

18
Q

What is a converted diesel generator?

A

A 600 V generator that has been re-configured as a 450 V generator.

19
Q

What 4 positions are on the switch found in the access panel on the switchboard?

A

440 v generator test
440 v generator
600 v generator
600 v generator test

20
Q

How is the 600 v generator re-configured to a 440 v generator?

A

Switch is placed to 440 v generator test position.
Generator output is checked to ensure correct voltage and frequency.
Switch is placed to 440 v generator position.

21
Q

What is the output of an emergency generator on a type 23?

A

270kW, 450 V, 60 Hz, 3 phase

22
Q

How is the emergency generator connected to the emergency switchboard?

A

Via an emergency generator supply breaker.

23
Q

What does the emergency switchboard do?

A

Connects 450 V, 60 Hz, 3 phase to essential equipment in an emergency.

24
Q

What equipment does the emergency switchboard supply?

A
Steering motors
HPSW pumps
Surgery/sickbay
Smoke clearance exhaust fans
Portable pump sockets
25
Q

What are two reasons why reducing noise produced by the ship is important?

A

Reduce the range at which the ship can be detected.

Reduce the interference with the towed array sonar operation.

26
Q

What is used for propulsion in a type 23?

A

An electric motor.

27
Q

What are the components of an electric motor system?

A
Air filter
Cooling fans
Yoke
Compole
Main pole
Armature
Commutator
Brush gear
Air cooler
28
Q

What is a LCP?

A

Local control panels

29
Q

Where can the propulsion motors be controlled from?

A

LCPs

30
Q

What does the converter regulator do?

A

Converts 600 V AC to 750 V DC

31
Q

How is the electrical propulsion motor cooled?

A

By water cooled air (sea water heat exchanger)

32
Q

Explain how an electrical propulsion motor is cooled?

A

Cool air is drawn through a filter into the motor, by two forced ventilation fans.
Air is then forced over the main poles, armature, commutator and brush gear.
The cool air absorbs the hear generated in the motor.
It is exhausted from the motor at the commutator end.
The air is then forced through a water cooled hear exchanger into the engine room.

33
Q

How is the electrical converted cabinet cooled?

A

Air is circulated by a fan through a heat exchanger.

34
Q

What can be done if the heat exchanger on the electrical converter cabinet cooling fails?

A

2 emergency inlet panels are removed.

This allows air to be drawn into the cabinet by the circulating fan.

35
Q

What is EMACB?

A

Electric motor air circuit breaker

36
Q

What SRPM AND Knots do 2 diesel generators produce?

A

65 SRPM and 8-9 knots

37
Q

What SRPM AND Knots do 4 diesel generators produce?

A

80 SRPM and 10-12 Knots

38
Q

What SRPM and Knots do 3 diesel generators produce?

A

80 SRPM and 10-12 Knots
