Who’s permission is needed to turn on navigation lights?
OOW/OOD
When are navigation lights tested?
Daily, one hour before sunset.

On at sunset and off at sunrise.
How are navigation lights controlled?
Operation of switches mounted on control panels. They are on the bridge or in the operations room.

Versatile console system.
What is the VCS 428 and where is it located?
Located in the quatermasters console.
Allows switching for special operations lights and masthead obstruction lights.
What is VCS 161 and where is it located?
Located in the operations room.
Enables the masthead obstruction lights to be used as desired.
What are the three statutory navigation lights?
Side lights
Mast head steaming light
Stern light
Where are side lights and what colour are they?
PORT - red
STBD - green
Where are masthead steaming lights and what colour are they?
Fwd and aft
White lights

Mounted on stern at deck level
What is done if the navigation lights fail?
Battery operated emergency lighting is used.
How are the emergency nav lights supplied?
Via fixed wiring by two series connected 12 v batteries.
What are special operation lights used for and how are they operated?
Used to indicate to other ships that special operating conditions are being conducted.
Operated by the VCS 428 unit.
What are the three types of special operation lights?
Not under command NUC
Replenishment at sea RAS
Man overboard MOB

Where and what colour are the NUC lights?
2 port 2 stbd Steady red lights Vertically mounted on the main mast Fwd and aft masthead lights will be off when NUC lights are on.

When are emergency special operation lights tested?

Where are emergency special operations lights stowed?
In lockers normally on or near the signal deck.
What must be done before emergency special operations lights are hoisted up the mast and why?
The lights must be plugged in and turned on before being hoisted. This is because an induced current may be present due to radar and radio interference.
What are the two types of miscellaneous lights?
Anchor lights
Masthead obstruction lights
Where and what colour are anchor lights?
On top of fwd and aft jack staffs.
White in colour.
Where and what colour are masthead obstruction lights?
Mounted at the top of the main mast port and stbd.
Red in colour.
What is weather deck lighting used for?
To illuminate the upper deck for ceremonial and operational conditions.
