T1 RPE revision Flashcards
Religion
A religion is a collection of beliefs, views, traditions and practices. They usually relate to the existence of a supreme being or supreme beings that create and maintain creation.
Philosophy
Philosophy is something that you DO rather than something you STUDY. It is the examination of the world that we live in through observation, thought and discussion.
Ethics
Moral ideas or rules that direct and guide a person’s behaviour. Ethics is all about what is right and wrong and how we can know what is right and wrong.
Symbols
pictures, objects, actions or rituals that make you think of something else. They REPRESENT something.
Symbolic Actions
Symbolic actions are a non-verbal way of expressing what we are thinking or feeling. For example putting hands together when praying.
Religious Symbols
images that are meant to represent a certain religion and tell us something about it. For example The Cross for Christianity.
Religious Artefacts
an item that has some special religious meaning or importance. For example a prayer mat in Islam or a Kirpan (ceremonial sword) in Sikhism.
Ceremony
A ceremony is an event of ritual importance, performed on a special occasion. Some examples of ceremonies include weddings, baptisms and The Eucharist. In religion ceremonies are seen as an outward sign of an inner change or event.
