T1 - Cell Biology Flashcards
What is a eukaryote?
Eukaryotes are organisms made up of eukaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells are complex, multicellular and include animal and plant cells.
What is a prokaryote?
A prokaryote is a prokaryotic cell . Prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler (than eukaryotic cells), unicellular. Eg. Bacteria
What organelles are found in plant cells but not animal cells?
Permanent vacuole, rigid cell wall and chloroplasts.
What is the role of a nucleus?
A nucleus contains genetic material that controls the activities of a cell.
What is the role of mitochondria?
Mitochondria is where reactions for aerobic respiration take place.
What is the role of cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is a gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen.
What is the role of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out of the cell.
What is the role of the Ribosomes?
The ribosomes are where protein synthesis takes place.
What is the role of a cell wall?
A cell wall is made of cellulose and it supports and strengthens the cell.
What is the role of a chloroplast?
Chloroplasts are where photosynthesis takes place. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
What is the role of a permanent vacuole?
A permanent vacuole contains cell sap.
What are plant and animal cells?
Eukaryotes
What are bacterial cells?
Prokaryotes
What do bacterial cells have instead of a nucleus?
A circular strand of DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm. They may also contain small rings of DNA called plasmids.
