T-Spine Flashcards
1
Q
Three Columns of Thoracolumbar Stability
A
- Anterior: ALL and ant. 2/3 body
- Middle: Post 1/3 body and PLL
- Posterior: post ligs and vertebral arch
2
Q
Three Columns – Fx
A
1 column = stable
2 columns = depends on extent
3 columns = unstable
3
Q
Compression Fx
A
- flexion forces collapse anterior vertebral body
- kyhphosis converts axial load to flexion force = increased anterior loads
- If just ant body fx = stable
- If post. elements involved, maybe stable
- most common post menopausal white bitches (kyphosis)
4
Q
Vertebroplasty
A
- cement injected into painful fx body
- immediate pain relief, restoration of mobility
- prevents fx movement
- doesn’t correct deformity but prevents further collapse
5
Q
Kyphoplasty
A
- like vertebroplasty but also corrects deformity
- ballon inserted, inflated to restore vert body size
- ballon removed, cavity filled w cement
6
Q
Idiopathic Scoliosis – types
A
Infantile: boys, high risk for progression – tx necessary
-Adolescent: 10-maturity, girls 7x boys, often shows up during growth spurts. Progression (and tx effectiveness) stops at skeletal maturity
7
Q
Functional Scoliosis
A
-caused by muscle
8
Q
Curve types
A
named for location and side of apex as viewed from behind
*Xrays taken PA not AP
