T AND O Flashcards
Most common organism in septic arthritis
STAPH AUREUS
Function of flexor tendon sheath
Allows tendons to be bathed in synovial fluid in the tendon sheath- allows gliding motion
Bad if infected as poor blood supply means infection can’t be cleared much like bone
Scarring in the tendon sheath causes stiff fingers
Treatment for open fracture
Co amoxiclav
4 Kanavel’s signs
Sausage digit, pain to percussion/palpation, pain with passive extension, held in passive flexion
= high suspicion of flexor tendon sheath infection
Compartment syndrome classic presentation
Pain out of proportion to clinical signs
Common Signs and Symptoms: The “5 P’s” are oftentimes associated with compartment syndrome: pain, pallor (pale skin tone), paresthesia (numbness feeling), pulselessness (faint pulse) and paralysis (weakness with movements). Numbness, tingling, or pain may be present in the entire lower leg and foot.
Treatment of compartment syndrome
Fasciotomy
Common secondary bone cancer sources
5 Bs- breast, bronchus, bidney, bhyroid, brostate
Surgical management of compartment syndrome
Fasciotomy decompression
