Q

What was the aim

A
  • Challenge the medical concept of mental illness
  • Reject the psychiatric treatment that are justified by this approach
  • Stop using terms like ‘psychoses’ ‘neuroses’ and ‘mental illness’ and think of individual behaviour instead
  • Reject the image of patients as helpless victims of pathalogical events out of their control
  • Stop coercive psychiatric practices which are incompatible with the moral idea of free societies.

Q

What does his study show he believes

A

That mental health is completely in the person’s control and their behaviour is not caused by a metnal illness but rather a state of mind which they can take themselves out of. He states that mental health is ‘a myth’ and how people seen as ‘mentally ill’ are not patients and have the opportunity to help themselves without medication or hospitalisation. He also mentions how mental illness is treated as a physical bodily illness which is why so many ‘misdiagnoses’ happen.

Q

What was the backgotund in bulletpoints

A
  • The psychodynamic explanation of mental health = The superego the ego and the ID which basically points at the brain balancing out it’s wants and thoughts with morals if fully developed and how any disturbing or hurtful thought should be pushed to the subconscience and if it hasn’t then it is by fault which creates the idea of a mental illness
  • The humanistic explanation of Mental illness = The idea that we hace to self-actualise to be calm thinking and if we lack the ability to understnad and accept ourselves then mental health develops badly thus causing mental illness. basically blaming ourselves for a lack of knowledge and acceptance on our own part(s).
  • The cognotive explanation of mental illness = The event itself doesn’t effect our mental health ut how we process the event and our cognitive thining process is what causes the illness(es) as we may see it in a negative light and take effect from it in a negative way.
  • The Behaviourist explanation of metnal health = We learn through interactions and can be classically or operate conditioned to think a certain way about anything which could be the routes of mental illness as social influence in a mental state consistently begins to take effect.
