SZ: psychological explanations Flashcards
Name the three theories of Family Dysfunction
Schizophregenic mother, double bind, expressed emotion
A01 for schizophregenic mother
-SZ develops as a result of paranoid delusions caused by a mother that is cold, rejecting and controlling
-Psychodynamic
A01 for Double Bind
-When child receives mixed messages from caretakers, and withdrawal of love
-“E.g, you would look less ugly if you smiled more”
-Leads to confusion and delusions about how the world is
A01 for Expressed emotion
-Is the amount of (negative) emotion expressed towards SZ person
-Includes hostility, verbal criticism and emotional over involvement
A01 for cognitive explanation
-SZ due to dysfunctional thought processes:
-Metarepresentation- ability to distinguish one’s own thoughts and feelings (SZ don’t have this, leads to delusions and hallucinations)
-Central control- ability to suppress autonomic response whilst performing deliberate tasks (SZ don’t have, leads to disorganised speech and speech poverty)
A03 for Family dysfunction
-Support- Tienari et al
-However SZG mother and double bind, lack of ev for parental characteristics leading to SZ (Harrington). Theory cam from clinical observation, so is reterospective and lacks internal validity
-Ethical implications- parent blaming- psychological harm
Elaborate on Tienari et al
-Finnish bio mothers with SZ- adoption study
-High gen risk and high conflict and criticism, 34% developed. Lower percentage when only high gen risk or C&C
-Shows environmental factors involved in SZ development
-Supports Expressed emotion as high C&C increases EE
A03 for cognitive explanation
-support- Stirling-stroop task, 30 SZ 30 control, SZ took twice as long to name correct font colours. Shows mental processing impaired.
-Lack of cause & effect
-Incomplete explanation- explains what is happening now to cause symptoms, not origin of condition- lowers internal validity
