Systems of the Body Flashcards
Nervous System Parts
Peripheral Nervous System and Central Nervous System
Somatic System
Part of peripheral nervous system - connects central nervous system with sensory receptors, skeletal muscles and surface of the body.
Sensory (Afferent) Neurons
Neurons transmit messages from sensory receptors to spinal cord and brain
Motor (Efferent) Neurons
Transmits memories from the brain or spinal cord to muscles and glands.
Autonomic System
Peripheral nervous gland system - regulates glands, involuntary muscles, and internal organs; controls heartbeat, respiration, perspiration, digestion and pupil dilation.
Sympathetic System
Branch of ANS that is active during emotional responses, like fear and anxiety, that spend the body’s reserves of energy.
Parasympathetic Systen
Branch of ANS most active during digestion, restores bodies reserves of energy.
Central Nervous System
Spinal Cord and Brain
Spinal Cord
Column of nerves within spine that transmits messages from sensory receptors to the brain, from brain to muscles, and glands throughout the body.
Brain
Fore-brain, mid-brain, and hind-brain
