Sleep Flashcards
Circadian Rhythm
Cycle connected to Earth’s rotation
Hypnagogic State
Transition from wakefulness to sleep
Beta Waves
Low amplitude, high frequency (Awake)
Alpha Waves
High amplitude, low frequency (Drowsy)
Stage 1 (NREM) Sleep
“Lightest Sleep” - slower theta waves. (Think falling sensation)
Stage 2 Sleep
Sleep spindles/k complexes. Eyes stop moving, heart/body pressure and movement drop.
Stage 3 Sleep
“Deep Sleep” or “slow wave sleep” Brain produces slower delta waves, high amplitude - low frequency
Stage 4 Sleep
“Deepest sleep” Delta waves continue to increase in amplitude. Sleepwalking stage/last NREM stage.
Stage 5 Sleep/ REM Sleep
Rapid-eye-movement under closed lids. Dreaming stage.
Freudian Theory of Dreams
All dreams are unconscious wishes/desires censored during the day.
