Systems of the Body Flashcards
Describe the components of the skeletal system as well as its functions
Components:
- Bone
- cartilage
- Tendons (attach muscles to bones)
- Ligaments (connect bones to each other)
- Joints
Functions:
- Protection (the skull protects the brain and the ribcage protects the heart and lungs)
- Hematopoiesis (formation of blood cells)
- Storage (bones store calcium, phosphorus, and adipose which is fat that can be used for energy)
- Leverage (muscles attach to bones, so when the muscles contract the bone moves)
Describe the types of tissue of the muscular system as well as its functions
Functions:
- Movement
- Heat (thermogenesis, ex. is when your body shivers when it gets cold)
Types of tissue:
- Cardiac
- Smooth (responsible for involuntary movement, found in hollow organs like the digestive tract)
- Skeletal (responsible for voluntary movement)
Describe the components of the cardiovascular system as well as its functions
Components:
- The Heart (major blood pump for the body)
- Blood Vessels (vessel for blood movement)
- Blood
Functions:
- Transportation system (transports O2, nutrients, and hormones, disposes of CO2 and other waste)
Describe the components of the lymphatic system as well as its functions
Components: - Spleen - lymph vessels/nodes - thymus - tonsils - bone marrow Functions: - Fluid regulation in body tissues - Filtration (filters blood in a fluid called lymph which is excess fluid from lymphatic vessels) - immunity (protects body from disease with white blood cells)
