Intro to Anatomy Flashcards
What is Anatomy?
The study of body structures and how they relate to each other
What is Regional Anatomy?
The study of structures in a particular area like bones, muscles, nerves, etc.
What is Systematic Anatomy?
The study of organ systems and the structures related to them like the nervous, skeletal, and muscular system.
What are the 4 main sub-disciplines of Anatomy?
Gross, Embryology, Histology, and Neuroanatomy.
What is Gross Anatomy?
the study of structures that can be seen with the naked eye.
What is Embryology?
the study of structure development from fertilization to birth
What is Histology?
The study of the human body at a microscopic level.
What is Neuroanatomy?
The study of nervous system structures. Includes gross structures and how they react with other parts of the body.
What is The Principle of Complementarity of Structure and Function?
Function always reflects structure.
ex.) thick and thin microfilaments in muscles contract which allow the muscle to contract which in turn allows for movement in joints.
What are the levels of structural organization from most to least complex?
Chemical level (atoms forming molecules) Cellular Level (molecules forming cells and organelles) Tissue level (similar types of cells form tissue) Organ level (different types of tissues form organs) Organ system level (different organs working closely together) Organismal level (different organ systems working together)
What are the 4 main types of tissue?
Epithelial
Connective
Nervous
Muscle
