Systems In The Human Body Flashcards
What are muscular systems for?
Organisms need muscular systems to be able to move.
What is the purpose of a skeleton?
The skeleton is the framework of the shape of the body and protects internal organs,as well as supports other tissues.
How many bones are in the human body?
206 bones
What do bones do?
Bones produce blood cells consciously and are therefore active.
They serve as a storage for minerals.
They also enable the body to move
What are the minerals bones store?
Calcium and phosphorus
How many parts does the skeleton consist of?
Two main parts, the axial and appendicular skeleton
What do muscles do?
Muscles are made of tissues that consists of fibers.
The most important functions are:ability to contract and relax
Movement
And ability to propel
What are the three types of muscles?
Cardiac muscles
Smooth muscles
Skeletal muscles
What are antagonistic muscles?
They work in pairs
Cannot push or stretch itself
When biceps contract (flex),the elbow bends,at the same time the triceps relax
And the other way around with triceps
3 things that join bones.
Tendons
Ligaments
Cartilage
What do these three things do?
Tendons:attach muscles to the bones
Ligaments:bones are held together by Ligaments and are found where two bones meet
Cartilage:it’s a binding tissue that covers the bones at the joints(it can occur independently)
What are diseases that affect bones?
Rickets
Osteoporosis
What are the causes of each?
Rickets:vitamin D deficiency
Osteoporosis:when bones are not replaced at the same rate as it is broken down, caused by mainly a calcium and vitamin D deficiency
What role does the circulatory system play?
Bring nutrients and oxygen to cells
Remove waste products so it can be excreted
What does blood consist of?
Plasma
White blood cells
Red blood cells (corpulscles)
Platelets
