Q

What is a model?

A

A simplified version of reality which can be used to understand how a system works and predict how it will respond to change.

9
Q

What are the cons of a model?

A
  • Accuracy is lost because model is simplified
  • Only as good as data
  • Predictions may be inaccurate
  • Can be manipulated for political reasons

16
Q

What is the biosphere?

A

The fragile skin of planet earth. Includes atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere.

17
Q

Are transfers or transformations more efficient?

A

Transfers require less energy so they are more efficient

18
Q

Pros of models?

A
  • Easier to work with than complex reality
  • Can be applied to simpler situations
  • Helps us to see patterns
  • Can be used to visualise very small things or very big things
  • Can educate, or help people that wouldn’t understand complex reality
19
Q

What is the Gaia Hypothesis?

A

The earth is a super organism with inputs and outputs maintained by negative feedback loops so it is in equilibrium.
