Resources Flashcards
What is a resource?
A good or service that has value to humans
How would ecocentrists change human carrying capacity?
Reduce use of non renewable resources and minimise use of renewable ones. Some may try to become self sufficient, such as growing their own food.
Why is it hard to measure human carrying capacity?
- Humans use a large range of resources. 2. We substitute resources. 3. Resource use varies depending on culture. 4. We import resources. 5. Developments in technology.
What is ecological footprint?
A model used to estimate the demands that human populations place on the environment.
How would technocentrists change human carrying capactiy?
Human carrying capacity can be expanded through technological innovation and development. They would strive to work towards efficiency. W
What does it mean to reuse?
The object is used more than once.
Give reasons why MEDCs typically have higher EFs?
Higher carbon footprint as they use more fossil fuels, air travel is more normalised, carbon sequestration tends to take longer because they are in less productive environments. MEDCs tend to eat more meat.
What is remanufacturing?
The objects material is used to make a new object of the same type.
What is absolute reductions?
simply using fewer resources.
What does EF take into account?
The area of land and water required to provide all the resources needed by the population, and the assimilation of all wastes.
When does the EF indicate unsustainable development?
When the EF is greater than the area available to the population.
Give reasons why MEDCs typically have higher EFs?
Higher carbon footprint as they use more fossil fuels, air travel is more normalised, carbon sequestration tends to take longer because they are in less productive environments.
What is a renewable resource?
One which can reproduce itself at a relatively quick rate. Our rate of consumption is less that rate of its reproduction.
What is a non-renawable resource?
Usually not an organism. Geological resource that cannot be replaced after use.
What is a replenishable resource?
Grows slowly
