When do you use engine anti-ice?
During “icing condition”

- visible moisture (clouds, fog w/bis less than 1 SM (1600m), rain, snow, sleet, ice crystals) is present, OR
- standing water, ice, or snow is present on the ramps, taxiways, or runways.
When to use Wing Anti-ice?
All Acft:
For acft w/or w/o ice detectors installed, ice accumulation on the flt deck windshield frames, windshield center post, windshield wiper post, or side windows can be used as an indicator or airframe icing conditions.
Caution: Do not operate wing anti-ice when TAT is above 10 C
When does the probe heat operate?
When an engine is operating
Proper switch/selector positions for the gnd and airborne use of the eng and wing anti-ice system in both icing and non-icing conditions?
IN icing conditions
“Switch” airplanes - ON GND - wing OFF, eng’s ON
- Airborne - wing ON or OFF as req’d, eng’s ON. Wing anti-ice, if req’d, is selected ON during the after T/O flow.
“Selector” airplanes - ON GND - wing OFF, eng’s ON.
- Airborne - AUTO/AUTO/AUTO accomplished on the after T/O flow.
Note: eng bld air MUST be used for engine anti-ice, APU bld air is insufficient. When running a single eng, only run ONE pack is also using eng anti-ice on the ground.
NOT in Icing Conditions:
“Square Switch” airplanes - all switches OFF.
“Selector Switch” airplanes - on the gnd - wing OFF, eng AUTO
- Airborne - AUTO/AUTO/AUTO accomplished on the after T/O flow
What advisory message will appear as the ice detection system cycles?
ICE DET ON and ICE DET OFF only on “switch” equipped aircraft.
When is wing anti-ice inhibited?
On the ground
Which source(s) of the pneumatic air should be used for eng and wing anti-ice?
Eng bleed air MUST be used for eng anti-ice, APU bleed air is insufficient.

Illum (Amber) - ice det sys is failed.
Note: This is because BOTH ice det have failed.
When do “selector” equipped acft (in auto) generate EICAS messages?
They do not generate EICAS messages unless there is a fault - operation is transparent. In AUTO, a fault is indicated be an ICING lgt and an ICING EICAS advisory message.
