Systems Flashcards
What is a system?
Organs that work together to perform a specific function
How many organ systems are there?
11
Name the organ systems
- Integumentary
- Skeletal
- Muscular
- Nervous
- Endocrine
- Cardiovascular
- Lymphatic
- Respiratory
- Digestive
- Urinary
- Reproductive
What is homeostasis?
It is the maintenance of the body conditions. (Balance)
What is an integumentary system?
It is the system that consist of the largest organ in the body. Skin.
What are the 2 layers of skin?
- Epidermis
- Dermis
What is epidermis?
The thinner layer of skin that forms a physical barrier to protect against abrasion, bacteria, dehydration and UV radiation
What is dermis?
The thicker layer of skin that contains specialized receptors and nerves that provide sensation (eg. touch, pressure, temperature, and pain
What are the major functions of the skeletal system?
- Support movement
- Protection of vital organs and tissue
- Mineral homeostasis
- Production of blood cells
How many bones is the human skeleton comprised of?
206
What are the components of the skeletal system?
Bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments
What are the 2 parts of the skeleton?
- Axial
- Appendicular
What does the axial skeleton consist of?
The skull, vertebrae, sacrum, ribs and sternum
What does the the axial skeleton protect?
The brain, spinal cord, and soft tissue
What does the appendicular skeleton consist of?
The bones in the limbs, shoulder, and hip
What are the 2 types of bone tissue?
- Cortical/compact
- Cancellous/spongy
What are cortical bones?
Dense and tough bone covered by fibrous membrane (periosteum)
What are cancellous bone?
Soft interior of the bones (contains bone marrow)
What is cartilage? Where is it located?
Connective tissue mainly made of collagen and elastic fibres. Its located at the end of bones to act as a cushion to prevent rubbing together
What are the 3 types of cartilage?
- Hyaline
- Elastic
- Fibroelastic
What is synovial fluid?
A fluid in the joints that act as a lubricant
What is a joint?
Any place where bone meets
What are the 4 types of movement in a joint?
- Gliding/sliding
- Ball & socket
- Pivot
- Hinge
What joint is immoveable?
Skull
What is a tendon?
Strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
What is a ligament?
Strong connective tissue that attaches bone to bone
What are the functions of the muscular system?
Controls the movement of:
1. Body through space
2. Food and blood through body
3. Air in and out of lungs
4. Produce heat
What are the 3 types of muscle?
- Skeletal
- Smooth
- Cardiac
What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles?
We can control when we contract our voluntary muscles.
