Cells, Tissue, and Organs Flashcards
Cells (similar in structure) that form together are called?
Tissue
Tissues that group together for a specific function are called?
Organs
What are cells?
Cells are the basic unit of life. They are invisible to the naked eye.
How do cells reproduce?
Through duplication and division
What are the 2 types of cells?
1) Sex cell (sperm or oocytes)
2) Somatic cells (all others)
What is mitosis?
The production of somatic cells
What is meiosis?
The production of sex cells
What binds a cell together?
A cell is bound together by the cell membrane. Inside the cell membrane is a fluid called cytoplasm
What is the centre of the cell called and its function?
Nucleus. It regulates activity and hereditary (DNA)
Name the 4 types of tissue
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscular
- Neural (nerve)
What is epithelial tissue?
It is tissue that covers exposed body surfaces.
Examples of epithelial tissue
- Skin
- Digestive tract
- Heart
What is connective tissue?
It is tissue that provides structural support and fills internal gaps. It transports fluids/dissolved materials and stores energy
Examples of connective tissue
- Bone
- Fatty tissue
- Blood
What is muscular tissue?
It is shortened tissue that contracts to perform a specific function. It also warms up the body
